Commission Junction – Affiliate Marketing

Commission Junction is joke unless someone can prove me wrong. After some split testing along with some CPA network offer tests, Commission Junction comes up a loser in every test.

We recently let a HydraNetwork CPA offer run its course. The first month it made over $5000 with our offer converting at over 25% for the month. For the month of August in which one of our offers expired, it closed out at a conversion rate of just over 21%. The offer paid out less than $10 for each conversion.

How’s that stack up with similar or identical offers on Commission Junction? We ran a CJ.com offer from the same company with a slightly different ad and it barely converted at 3%. After testing another offer from a major company we had ZERO conversions for our test on 8/28/09.

In yet another test, we bought some products for our office through a Commission Junction banner on one of our sites, and the order never recorded. Only after contacting the vendor directly did they give us credit for the purchase. CJ.com lists various reasons why a click or conversion may not register successfully. Our take is that most affiliate management networks are designed to break easily to reduce commissions paid out. (No hard proof, just a professional hunch)

In addition to our split testing, we track all of our outbound clicks to affiliate offers and those numbers don’t always match and some with startling differences in some cases.

    A year and a half ago, I signed up wit CJ to add vacationhomerentals.com listings to my website. I only put about 400 listings in a dozen different state pages. Around December, 2008 I was receiving on average, 7 clicks per day or $21 per day. OK so i started adding more and by March I had about 3,000 listings which were now in all 50 states. My average numbers? 7 clicks per day, $21 per day. Between March and September I added another 2,000 listings including the Canada Provinces. September numbers? 7 clicks per day, $21 per day. Since september I increased the listings up to the current level of 6607. I also during late November and up to today (December 16, 2009) went back though every listing and compared them with the current listings available for me to download and delete all the expired advetisment and added any new ones. Additionally, Google’s Web Analytics shows that pageviews to my website have increased thoughout the year from 550,000 per month 865,000 views per month. Todays average CJ numbers for the month of December? You got it; 7 clicks per day, $21 per day.

    Why would I keep playing along, you may ask? Think about it.

    Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

    I use CJ; but less and less.
    There are certainly serious “problems” with the way they (or some of their merchants) record affiliate sales.
    I have now double proof of this.
    Some time ago one of their merchants moved to a different affiliate program, so I followed.
    Since the change, my affiliate sales have trebled or quadrupled for this merchant.
    More recently, I voluntarily moved a bunch of affiliate links for a different CJ merchant over to a rival affiliate program with a different affiliator . Result: more sales in three weeks than CJ produced in a year.
    No wonder CJ is a profitable company.
