Social Media – Does it Work?

I found this testimonial recently on a site for a lead generation tool. The part I found funny was the fact that most of the folks selling social media marketing services claim you can replace pay per click and other forms of marketing.

This person utilized a $4000 lead generation tool to find potential customers for social media marketing services. If social media is so powerful, why didn’t this person just use social media to find new customers?

“After experimenting with XYZ lead generation tool for a while I finally struck Gold!
After completing a course on Social Media Marketing, I decided to search for prospects
in need of Social Media Marketing. With just one search, I scored 2 new clients. These 2
contracts alone paid for my investment in XYZ lead generation tool!” — B.R.

In a recent mastermind conference call with Perry Marshall and nearly 300 other participants, feedback was unanimous that savvy marketers use pay per click marketing over social media to generate consistent and measurable business results whether it be new sales, leads, or prospects.

With that being said, I still think social media has a role in marketing that should not be overlooked. The question is how much time do you allocate towards social media vs. other forms of online and offline marketing?

Pitfalls of Social Media Marketing

Some might think it is all upside becoming a social media marketeer, but you need to real Perry Belcher’s farewell blog post in its entirety to understand what I’ve been saying from the beginning about social media marketing… Once you go high profile, it’s an all consuming task. Perry Belcher is taking his life back and going private. Perry is one of the most respected high-profile social media marketing trainers in this space so his thoughts are worth considering before you decide your company is going to rely entirely on social media to generate leads or prospects for your business.

Dear Friends,

Today I decided to end my career as an internet marketing trainer. I have told so many of my students that when your 1% unhappy it’s time to get out. Now it’s time to follow my own advice.

Over the last 18 months or so I have had the privilege to meet and work with some of the coolest, kindest, most generous people I have ever known. I have truly enjoyed sharing my knowledge of internet marketing and social media marketing with each and every one of you.

So why would I quit? There are several reasons, but here are a few…

First, training and coaching, for me, is an all encompassing business. I took on every client’s challenges as my own and and my time with my family has been very limited since I began on this path. I look very forward to focusing on just being dad and a husband for a while.

Secondly, while there are a great many people who have shown me a great deal of love, there are a few that have shown a heavy dose of hate and anger, partially because of my past. This group has unfortunately been much more vocal and harsh.

While I can take reasonable criticism, today I have concerns for my safety and the safety of family.

Third, I remembered that it’s much more fun and profitable to be a marketer than it is to teach internet marketing…a truth that someone had to hit me over the head to help me remember.

So, that being said I need to make a clean break….

I have asked that all my internet marketing training products be removed from the market.

I am in the process of removing all internet marketing related materials form my blogs.

Over the next bit of time I will be reverting my social media connections back to close personal friends.

I will have canceled all future internet marketing and social media speaking opportunities and will not accept new ones.

In short, I am taking my life back to private.

My current clients will be supported by Ryan Deiss’ company, Infomastery, but I will be creating no new internet marketing trainings and I have canceled all future speaking engagements regarding internet marketing.

For any current customers and clients who are still owed coaching/consulting from me, I will still be hanging around for as long as it takes to make sure that you are taken care of. In other words, while my public persona will more or less vanish, I’ll still be helping you privately and WILL NOT violate prior agreements. (NOTE: This includes “Social Media Money System” customers who are owed coaching calls with me.)

Best Internet Marketing Stategy

I was watching a video this evening from a Social Media marketing guy I respect, Perry Belcher. He is an up and coming player in the Social Media marketing space. In one of his latest video releases he mentioned some of the excuses he hears such as I don’t have time for Twitter or Facebook. He went on to say that if you don’t like Social Media, don’t do it.

Here’s the question it brought to mind for me as I received several emails this evening with some questions on Internet marketing. What is the “Best Internet Marketing Strategy”? We now have organic search engine optimization, Pay Per Click, Social Media, List marketing, Blogging, and the list goes on and on. Everyone who is a guru in their own space wants to sell books, videos, seminars, or software that relates to their specific area of expertise. The last thing someone needs is information overload. So where do you start? I say the answer varies based on different factors:

  • Every business or individual has different goals in mind for their website
  • Not every form of Internet marketing is ideal for everyone or every business
  • Do you like getting on camera?
  • What is your level of knowledge or expertise?
  • What kind of a budget do you have?
  • How much competition do you have?

So What’s The Right Answer?

The best Internet marketing strategy is the one that works for you, your company, and your personal goals for your website. Find two or three Internet marketers that you can trust. Find someone who is already successful in the area you are looking to succeed. Become a student. As an Internet marketer I always tell people that I’m a full-time student. There is always something new to learn. While Internet marketing changes every day, there are a few fundamentals that can give  you a good foundation and get you moving in the right direction.

Google AdWords: Don’t Put All Your Eggs In One Basket

No, this is not an Easter related article and has nothing to do with putting Easter Eggs in multiple baskets. But what it does point out are some of the inconsistencies with Google Adwords and why you need to spread your risk out on multiple search engines and continue to explore every avenue including email, social media marketing, video marketing and other methods that will bring consistent traffic to your website that will convert to a sale, a lead, or whatever it is you are looking to measure.

In the past two weeks one of our Google Adwords accounts traffic dropped off sharply. The account has been active for over a year and has a fairly consistent track record. The traffic on this account dropped off by over 100,000 impressions per day. Several calls to Google resulted in one rep stating that is was probably competition (which I challenged) and a second rep stating that it is normal for Content Network traffic to swing up and down much higher than 100,000 impressions on any given day.

No matter how successful an Internet marketer you are, your business will be subject to the fluctuations of Google Adwords traffic and any other search engine PPC program for that matter. This is one reason video marketing and social media marketing have exploded.
