The Funny Thing About Internet Gurus

The other day my son was reading a copy of Mike Filsaime’s “The Secrets To Building A 7 Figure Business Online / MarketingDotCom”. He read a section where the author Omar Martin talked about newbies to Internet marketing getting information overload. My son asked me; “Dad, do you have information overload? You can get information overload if you try to read too much stuff”.¬† I had to tell him the truth so I said YES.

I’ve been involved with Internet marketing since 1999. As a professional Internet marketer, there is always a new tip, trick, tool, method, or gadget that can help customers generate more traffic, visitors, conversions, or sales. As an Internet marketer school never stops. I’m acclimated to Information overload, it’s in my DNA. But for the business ownner or Internet newbie, Information overload can stop you in your tracks.

Here’s the issue I have with “The Big Internet Guru’s” – while most will tell you to pick one to three mentors and stick with them, they all sell, cross-sell, product launch one another’s products. Maybe I sign up for information on Frank Kern’s Mass Control 2.0, next thing I know, I’m getting an offer From Frank on Mike Filsaime’s Butterflymarketing 2.0. Don’t get me wrong, I respect everyone of these guys. It’s my job and responsibility to keep up with the latest trends, but I now read much of my Internet marketing peer’s email from my spam bin. Sign up for 10 guru’s email lists and multiply it by 10.

So where do you start? If I had to start all over again, I would start by seeking out a mentor(s) in your specific niche or area of Interest. Find a marketing mentor who has a proven track record in your field or area of interest. If you start signing up for emails from SEO gurus, Blog Gurus, Social Media gurus, or Video marketing gurus as a newbie you WILL end up with information overload.

What would I do next? Start with the basics. Whether you start with organic traffic, Pay Per Click, or Video marketing, start with one and see it through. Internet marketing is a bit like building a house. If you try to shingle the roof before you pour the foundation and frame the house, you’re likely to have some issues.

Mike Filsaime’s Butterfly Marketing 2.0 Launch Crash

As many of you might have been online for Mike Filsaime’s Butterfly Marketing¬† 2.0 giveaway today, it has been a disasterous start. Many folks were following the pre-launch¬† via his site and doing a live broadcast using ustream.tv

During the pre-launch so many folks tried to order early that they crashed the server. I’ll be posting some video clips and screen shots later. There is much to be learned through watching this live broadcast and product launch, but the main point to take away is when you are dealing with technology, the Internet, and Web 2.0 anything can happen or go wrong.

Just as I started to post this message Mike Filsaime came on to alert everyone and apologize for taking Twitter down.
