Where Can I Find Good SEO Online Advertising?

Online Advertising Insights

I was in the middle of several projects and stopped to look at some of my web stats and noticed a keyword phrase that appears to on the rise; “search engine pro scam”

I received this email the other day relating to the same issue:

As a search engine marketing professional since 1998 I’ve seen the good and the ugly in online marketing. When people ask me what I do, I tell them I’m a full-time student of online marketing. Fact of the matter is that online marketing for those of us who do it for a living can be mind numbing at times. We need to sort out the fads, trends, and principles that stand the test of time.

Regarding search engine marketing scams, I’m amazed at how many emails I get from folks asking me to stop charging their cards or to stop service and they have no idea they are communicating with the wrong website / company.

Here is a thread I found related to the search engine pro scam real estate agents are talking about online:

search engine marketing scams online advertising

“Philip Roy” – says:

“I have had the same problem. I wish I knew a way to find a good SEO and advertising company but it seams like they are all full of it. Please let me know if you find a good one.”

“Dan Kennedy Homes” – says:

“Sadly, I’m experiencing the same thing.  Major rip off!”

I think folks get ripped off in their online advertising for several reasons:

  • Lacking knowledge – My best clients have a basic understanding of what SEO or paid advertising is.
  • Instant gratification – Folks want instant results and end up making poor decisions on how they spend their online marketing dollars.
  • Chasing the next big thing – There is a new next big thing on the Internet every 60 seconds. Start with the basics.
  • Cheap Mindset – We’ve gotten ourselves into a cultural mindset that everything can be outsourced for peanuts (I won’t bother to mention any of the sites here) – You get what you pay for.

Vince Curtis summed it up best – “NO Company can guarantee placement on Google except Google.”

I’ve been saying this for years. Additionally, Google and the other top search sites change algorithms on a regular basis. Any company that promises or guarantees a #1 spot on Google…. run!! Sure, someone can get you to the top temporarily, but it’s the basics that will help keep you there.

Where to find good online advertising and SEO

If I knew nothing about SEO or online marketing I would start with some referrals. I’ve try to work with people I have some sort of connection with friend, business associate, etc. vs. some random person I found on Craigslist or a foreign country I can’t pronounce the name of. Another place I would look is a local SEO / SEM marketing group. Many major cities have local SEO / SEM marketing groups that meet regularly.

Don’t put too much stock into certifications… ask to see proof or results. Certificates are great to show some level of competency or understanding, but the ability to generate traffic and results that turn into profit are two different animals. I’ve personally managed over 2 million dollars in ad spend on Google Adwords and Bing while generating thousands of leads for auto dealers nation-wide, but I have yet to get Google Adwords or Microsoft Adcenter certifications.

What type of experience have you had with an SEO or online advertising company?

Frosty The Snowman Visits Dallas | Search Engine Marketing?

Today the Dallas Fort Worth area had the pleasure of being visited by Frosty the Snowman along with more than four inches of snow in some places. Since it is uncommon for us to get snow in the Dallas Fort Worth area; it’s a big deal when it does. Below you can see some photos of my son and daughter with a friend visiting with Frosty. So you’re probably wondering at this point, what does snow in Dallas Texas and Frosty the Snowman have to do with Internet marketing.

Here’s the connection; Everyday there are local, national and global events or occurrences that are blog and newsworthy. By writing an article or providing some valuable insight or perspective, you could generate additional clicks to your website.

If you’re not taking advantage of breaking news and events, you’re probably missing out on some potential traffic. Don’t worry; you may not need to do a bunch of writing. There is a market emerging for sponsored blog posts or articles. I’m doing some research on this now so I’ll post results of what I find later, but we will certainly be providing a venue on SearchEnginePro and some of our other sites for sponsorship of our articles and posts.

So whether you actually write the article or pay to sponsor one, you can get in on the immediate buzz of breaking news by sponsoring posts on someone else’s site or blog. This will give you valued back links to your site.

While we are enjoying a bit of snow here in the Dallas, TX area; Washington DC and the eastern seaboard are bracing for another winter blast that could have them buried in snow for a couple of months.

So how do you tie it together? Let’s say for example we’re talking about my favorite auto service center here in the Dallas area, Christian Brothers Automotive. They might write some articles or create buzz because of the weather we are having.

  • Loosing traction in the Dallas snow? Bring your vehicle in for a free tire inspection.
  • Are your tires ready for snow in Dallas? You could write and article on the importance of good traction and how to check for excessive tire wear.

I’m sure you get the point. There are many ways to take advantage of daily or upcoming events that will generate buzz and bring additional traffic to your website.

Until the next post, say hi to Frosty if you see him in your neighborhood.

Search Engine Marketing Can Be Overwhelming

35The other day I had a conversation with a Realtor. He is an agent in the RE/MAX system, has a website and a slew of tools available for him to market his real estate business online. Here is what he said that struck a chord with me.

“I’ve got so many tools available for search engine marketing and promotion I’m overwhelmed”

As we continued our conversation, he was looking to me for help with some basics so he could see some incremental progress in his online marketing and lead generation.

60I think this is where many folks are today with their online marketing. There are so many tools and variations that it’s easy even for those of us who call this our profession to get bogged down in SEO/SEM tool testing rather than taking predictable steps each day to improve our search engine marketing presence or to reach a targeted and measurable goal. I’m going to document our progress from the initial set up of a new domain name and will share with visitors at least once per month some tips and ideas for keeping it simple to prevent search engine marketing overload.

Are you a small business owner overwhelmed with all the tools available to market and promote your business online? If so, share your story or thoughts with our visitors.

This post has nothing to do with search engine marketing, but is a great example of how mobile phone productivity can help customers and providers of search engine marketing services using WordPress.

Why Good Domain Names Are Critical To Your Business

We all know that good domain names are important to your business. I’ll take it a step further and say it’s even critical.

While there is much debate on search engine marketing tactics, SEO, PPC strategies or Pay Per Click strategies for those of you still learning the acronyms; One thing is clear. The industry has sort of leveled off with respect to tools and information. We all know how to spy one another’s Adword campaigns, we can scrape sites for keywords. So from that perspective, the folks that do this professionally understand most of the tools and tricks of the trade.

So where does that leave us? With a level playing field, I believe at the end of the day it comes back down to the domain or domain names you choose to represent your business. If  you’ve got two competing Google Adword ads and one has a display URL / Landing page URL of somereallygoofylongdomainname.info vs. mypowerdomain.com ultimately ads and marketing with winning domain names will play a key role in having that slight advantage in a day when everything is visible when it comes to online marketing.

Video Search Engine Marketing

Recently I received an email and video offering a new service and software product allowing the average person to add video quickly and easily to any website. The video pitch goes on to state that utilizing YouTube, Revver, and other similar video services shows visitors to your website that you don’t know how to add video, it’s cheap looking,  and you give visitors the opportunity to click off your website.

I must respectfully disagree. There are numerous reasons why someone looking to utilize video marketing would want to utilize YouTube and similar services:

  • YouTube and Revver type video services get indexed by the major search engines much better than self served video from your own website.
  • YouTube and similar type video services put your video, product, or service in front of a wide and growing audience.
  • If you are using video and not showing up on YouTube or other similar video services you are missing an important marketing avenue.

While one can argue that third party hosted videos give visitors the opportunity to click off your site or check out another video, that’s true of any form of Internet marketing. Whether you’re talking about SERPs, PPC, directories, etc. there is almost always an opportunity for a visitor to go somewhere else.

Video marketing is subject to some of the same principles as other forms of Internet marketing. How well is your video message? Does your video communicate your product or service effectively? Is your website and internal processes set up adequately to take orders, inquiries, or help a potentially new customer?

Hosting and adding video to your personal website is nothing new. Bandwidth pricing is so favorable that you can purchase additional bandwidth to support your videos for pennies. A quick Google search will reveal a number of free and inexpensive tools that will help the average person put video on their website quickly and cost effectively.

What are your thoughts on adding video to your website? Are you using video? Why or why not? Share your thoughts with our visitors.
